Follow Your Heart

I’m sure we can all agree the phrase “follow your heart” is such a big thing in society right now. Everyone talks about it. Everyone makes it a goal in their lives. But is it wise for us as Christians to follow this idea? Let’s see what the Bible says:
Jeremiah 17:9,
”The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?”
According to this verse it is clear we cannot trust our hearts. Despite what society says, our hearts, if not kept close to the Lord, are wicked and can be a fountain of evil.

Proverbs 4:23, “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”
Why is this so important? Proverbs 23:7, “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he…”

Our heart is the place where God deals with us. This is where He gives us direction. If we constantly choose to think about bad things, we will become that. It’s important to guard our hearts and our thoughts. I literally say this all the time but feelings COME and GO. Our hearts are very unstable and the Lord knows that! He knows our motives and intentions. He knows that without Him, without His truth in our hearts, we are like a leaf blown in the wind.

I think that many times people put so much emphasis on “following your heart” because they don’t know what else to turn to. They are seeking for true happiness and think that this is where to find it. They are longing for peace, for someone to turn to, but fail to find anyone on this earth so they look to themselves and try to feel a sense of purpose. How sad! Jesus is stretching out His arms to us but many times we can’t see it or feel it because we are too busy trying to trust our hearts or trying to fix ourselves. If only we would look up and seek Him with all our heart, we would be able to see that not only does He fulfill our highest expectations and give us peace and joy, but that He truly is our Father.

May this be our prayer: “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.” Psalm 51:10
